The picture from Graham Watson of the cannibal sums up the day for me. The hill that has a monument to the champion caused the most carnage I have ever seen in my short years of watching cycling. The roads turned to ice and in true Merckxian style the Frenchman Chavanel cruised to a solo victory after a whole day in the breakaway. Afterwards he was congradulated by the man himself.
