100 to zero

Firstly I want to say that my attempt at the century came to a grinding holt today. As I mentioned yesterday there was some rain predicted but when they predict rain its normally a bit here and there so I reckoned I'd set off on the road. I woke up to chirping birds and the hallowed sound of thunder. This did me no good but I thought to persevere knowing that I would get a bit wet in anyway. Just before I left there was a little shower of rain but then it stopped after about ten minutes. I thought I could handle that for the day.
As you can see my wet weather gear included a PVC jacket I normally use in the garden when it threatens in winter. You may also notice the cobwebs as it does not rain that much and I work int he garden even less when it does. Mirit was a star by thinking about it, I'm sure without that bit of protection things may have ended very different from what they did. My bag full of yummy treats I set of. The plan was to climb Mt. Meron and then descend along the Lebanese border. I had calculated that this would be a 75km loop and would just have to zig zag on the way back to make up the kilo's.
I set off and basically because I stay at sea level started to climb immediately. This climbing was to be by my side for the next three hours as i made my way up. I have never climbed for this amount of time, although there was one respite where it descends a bit although the kicker on the other side made me wish for just a solid climb.Things were going well although my legs were hurting from this constant climbing but then what goes up must come down.
And down it came. As I made the turn towards the north things started to get a bit more chilly and the rain also increased. I had prepared for this but the hail that followed caught me off guard. the PVC jacket was doing its best but within five minutes I was soaked to the bone and freezing. The wind had picked up and the storm had blown in. Only this storm had tiny pellets that it was beating me with. With no covered bus stop to take refuge I had to continue till I could find cover. By this point all extremities had all but gone numb and braking was done by middle finger only, so some vengeance on the gods. The wind battered me around and I was truly afraid, I was cold and lighting was crashing down around me. As cold as I was I knew that one of those through me would make cremation a quick option. Finally a bus stop with some shelter came along and I colapsed into it. Shivering like crazy, hypothermia started to set on. The roads were iced over and I was drenched. I then realized I had left the cellphone at home, no good in this type of situation and I was really getting worried. By now I was shaking uncontrollably and there was no visibility through the downpour. A car passed by and I tried to get its attention but it just carried on going.

This is not a busy road so was not sure how many more idiots would be riding in these conditions in a car let alone bike. My faith in humanity was restored when about two minutes later the car appeared again, it had made a uturn and had come to see what was wrong. The gave me a lift to Mirit's kindergarten where she works. She was not sure whether to be angry or worried but i must say that with someone like me around I would have kicked my arse out long ago. She made me some tea and phoned her parents who came to pick me up. Thank goodness that her dad managed to get up there. So thank you to both of them, I seem to be using all my credits with the family on my crazy adventures. So unfortunately I did not make the century this month although hypothermia is as good an excuse as any. Lets hope next month I don't leave it till the last minute.

Heavy

Thats how my legs felt today. Was really just out to spin the legs to get them ready for tomorrow. Left the century challenge a bit late this month. The list includes weather, work and sickness but still not really anything of substance. So tomorrow I will attempt the century on my MTB but because of the rain and not wanting my bike looking like it did last week in the mud and the obvious reason that I want to finish the hundred I will do the ride on the road.
Today was beautiful and to tell you the truth riding the century today would have been perfect but some of us need to work. So snuck this afternoon for a quick ride just to loosten up the legs seeing as I've been desk bound the whole week becasue of a project that is going live next week.
There was a slight breeze helping me get there but the legs were pumping cement instead of blood so every turn felt like I was pedaling in water. Had the iPod in and listening to some podcasts so the distraction was welcome. All in all not a fantastic ride but at least got out for some saddle time. Been feeling super tired lately so that has also kept me second guessing whether I should go for a ride or sneak ina power nap. Normally the latter wins.
Was looking at lending a road bike for tomorrow from Erez but he said that those thin wheel and slick tires don't do to well in the wet. Thats the reason for choosing the MTB for the ride. So I will avoid mud and gain stability but in all likelyhood still get home drenched.

Morning showers

Went for a swim last night. Really been suffering from lack of exercise and the sloth mode I was in was not helping productivity. Felt like a cement loader moving through the water but at least i got the blood flowing. I could feel my cells clapping their hands as I sat in the sauna and jacuzzi, I never said that it was all hard work.
During the half time of the Man United vs Inter game last night I went into the shed and cleaned up the bike. I seem to be getting some serious chain suck in the wet so will need to see what I can do about that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated so leave a comment or twitter me.
As for the ride this morning we started off cold and saw a beautiful rainbow on the horizon. Remembering something about water in the air from science class I knew we were either witnessing the passing rain or oncoming rain. Due to the fact that we were exposed to the elements Murphy chose the later. Felt fantastic getting out there and did quite a few kilometers at an easy pace.

Diggnation

You might have noticed a new button on some of my posts. I've added a Digg button to try and get some more promoting for my posts. Seems that my numbers are hanging and not really going up. As much as I'd like to say that I'm purely writing this for getting the message out there it would be a bad thing to get the numbers up a bit. I am also looking at getting more Israeli releated riding into my blog. It seems I write mainly about my riding and even though there is a growing number of riders out here I'm sure I can promote the riding more over here. So go ahead and click on the Digg button. If you're interested in how I did it take a look here.

Bike Shack in Progress

Seeing as I've been side winded by this flu I've been wondering about when I can get back. Been able to catch up on some blogs and was programming a bit but nothing too serious due to the watermelon currently situated on my neck. The worst is that I thought I was getting better but as I'm sitting here tonight I seem to be going downhill again. Lets hope it passes quickly. In the mean time here are some pics of the bike shed that is currently in the making.

Flu

So this is what my day involved. Plenty of tea, chicken soup and that white gold. As soft as they make it appear in the adverts I can stand testament to the fact that is is like sandpaper after wiping your nose for the upteenth time. Lets hope tomorrow I'll be on the mend.

Tough training and knocked out

As you can see my posting is sporadic at best, a few good days followed by gaps. This models my ride time at the moment so I'm suffering from lack of saddle time. A week since training i got back in the saddle yesterday for training. Had a good session but woke up in the morning feeling the startings of the flu. well by lunch time I was suffering and called it a day. Mirit took great care of me making a fantastic bowl of chicken soup. Just trying to sleep it off today so I will be back by the weekend.

Quick One

Well I can't say that much is happening on the riding front. We had voting today in Israel so was really looking forward to a great day riding. With the weather we've been having lately I was expecting no problems but as Murphy would have it this was not the case. This morning we had some crazy wind blowing in the oncoming storm so I got into the garden and started cleaning out the shed. It is a huge place so I've been planning my way to create a bike shed. So after cleaning up and moving things around I have a temporary area to get my stuff done. But as you can see a spot of paint will be needed.

Not much of a ride

Went out today but forgot the camera. Would you believe it, the sun going down through the clouds were amazing. You'll just have to take my word for it. Also went out and bought a camera bag to protect it, up until now it was in one of my odd socks. The ride was about an hour and I covered 20km. It was up to the north so nothing super interesting except for the amazing sunset. I need to wash the bike down so did that but I reckon I will need to do a more thorough wash tomorrow after my ride with a good dash of oil and greese in all the important places. Tomorrow I'll take the camera out with the new bag so I should have some photo's again.

Clayed in

Didn't go for a ride today. My bike as you can see looks like hell so didn't want to abuse her again without a wash beforehand. The house moving means that the hose is still in a box somewhere so will try to find a descent substitute tomorrow to wash the grime off. I've also got to get the tires filled with some Joe's because they seem to be leaking slowly. Everytime I go on a ride they need to be pumped.

Riding in Potters Clay

No complaints that I got out for a ride today. Just the amount of rain that fell turned our lovely hard pack into a mushy mess. I have no problem with but, quite the opposite. Seeing cross riders covered head to toe in the brown stuff gives me the urge to go sloshing through puddles. What I do have a problem with is that we do not have mud as such here. Its more the dump ground of all the pottery's of the world. The stuff sticks and does not make for interesting riding but rather grinding components.
The mud got stuck in the front fork, between the rear wheel and in the derailleurs. My chain was completely covered white the white clay and my tires went from a slender 26x2.0 to 29x5.0. Well such is life, after the first bit we decided that the little time we had would better be spent on road. So off we went to dodge between morning traffic.
Perfect morning and we almost got up to two hours on the bike. Ended up with about 30km in total so an awesome start to the day. The sunrise was amazing and everything lit up so beautifully once it started hitting the tree's and fields of wheat. If you look carefully at the photo you can see a big blob of mud stuck to my glasses. I was riding behind Erez as we were shedding the mud on the descent on the road. You can just imagine a shaggy haired doggy shaking its wet body and you'll get the image of what I was riding behind.

From Pain to Blubber

Well I've been on the down low this past week after my day of pain last week. I do have an excuse, at least one that sort of gets me off the hook. We needed to move house. Not the best of excuses but one that does need quite a bit of coordinating and keeping tempers in order. This left very little energy for anything else so Thursday, Friday and yesterday I was AWOL from the bike. This week I'll shift back from the real world into some saddle time.
